Severe heatwave tightens grip on Sindh

The heatwave continues to grip several districts of Sindh, including Karachi, where temperatures have surged to 42°C, with the heat index pushing it to a sweltering 44°C.

In other parts of the province, Hyderabad is experiencing an intense feels-like temperature of 47°C, while Sukkur is not far behind at around 45°C, amplifying concerns over public health and safety, according to media reports.

Due to the extreme heat in Karachi, heatwave relief camps have been set up across the city. Health experts have advised citizens to avoid leaving their homes unnecessarily. Meanwhile, the weather is relatively moderate in Lahore, Peshawar, and Islamabad. Earlier, temperatures of 34°C were recorded in Lahore, 33°C in Islamabad, and 29°C in Peshawar.

Health experts advise citizens to take precautionary measures

In view of the ongoing heat in Karachi, health experts have advised citizens to take precautionary measures. According to health experts, as heat intensity increases, the risk of various infections also rises. Citizens are therefore advised to avoid consuming outside food and drinks and to drink boiled water.

They added that substandard food and beverages can cause gastrointestinal problems. People should avoid going outside unnecessarily during the day, wear light-colored and loose clothing, and cover their heads when stepping outside.

The intensity of the heat in Karachi is expected to increase further from today. Health experts also recommend avoiding direct sunlight between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and say that drinking plenty of water and using oral rehydration salts (ORS) can help prevent salt deficiency.

Regarding the weather, the Meteorological Department has stated that the heat intensity in Karachi is likely to rise today. The maximum temperature may reach 40°C, while the “feels-like” temperature could range between 46°C and 49°C.

According to the department, sea breezes are expected to resume in the evening. However, the heat is likely to persist on Monday, and there is no chance of rain in the city.
