The Orange Line Metro Bus services in Islamabad have decided to resume charging the regular fare from passengers, starting May 4, today.
However, people can still enjoy free of cost travel on the Red Metro Services and Electric (EV) buses. This free service will remain available until May 5.
The Orange Line Metro Bus is a modern rapid transport system in Islamabad, the federal capital of Pakistan. The service links important urban areas to the Islamabad International Airport.
It was inaugurated in April 2022, and it provides quick and affordable transportation for thousands of daily commuters in the twin cities.
According to the details provided regarding the services’ key statistics, the length of its route is 25.6 km or 15.9 miles of dedicated bus lanes. The travel time is approximately 45 minutes from one end to the other.
Additionally, the flat rate of its fare is Rs50 per trip, and it has a daily ridership of 20,000+ passengers according to a 2024 estimate.
Will free public transport continue in Punjab?
Before this, sources said that the free public transport service in Punjab is likely to be extended for one more month. The final decision will be made by Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz.
Sources further stated that the CM has called a meeting to make the final decision.
The Transport Department has already submitted recommendations for a one-month extension and completed the necessary groundwork.
According to the proposal, free travel would continue for another month on the Orange Line Metro Train and Metro Bus Service.
Similarly, free travel would also remain available for one more month on Speedo buses and electric buses.
According to the reports, approximately 290,000 passengers use the Orange Line Train each day.
In addition to this, more than 100,000 people travel via Metro Bus for free. Overall, nearly 800,000 citizens across Punjab benefit from this service daily.
