New market and shop closure timings announced in Islamabad

Shop Market closure timings

The Office of the District Magistrate in Islamabad has announced new closing timings for markets, businesses, and commercial activities, sparking strong reactions from traders and residents. The revised schedule comes as part of ongoing austerity measures aimed at conserving energy and managing resources more efficiently.

According to the official notification, all shops, markets, and shopping malls across the federal capital will now close at 8:00 PM throughout the week. However, certain essential services have been exempted from the restriction. These include pharmacies, hospitals, petrol pumps, dairy shops, sports facilities, and IT and call centres, which will continue operating beyond the set hours.

Restaurants, grocery stores, and other food outlets have been given slightly more flexibility. They will close at 10:00 PM, but takeaway and delivery services will remain unaffected, offering some relief to customers who rely on late-night food options.

The new rules also apply to social events. Marriage halls and event venues, including private functions held at homes, must wrap up by 10:00 PM. This move is expected to impact the city’s wedding season and event industry significantly.

The new timings came into effect on May 5, 2026, and will remain in place until further notice. Authorities have urged citizens and business owners to strictly follow the guidelines to avoid penalties.

While officials say the measures are necessary for national interest, many traders have expressed concerns over reduced business hours and potential financial losses. On the other hand, some citizens believe the move could help reduce unnecessary energy consumption and bring more discipline to daily routines.

As the policy rolls out, all eyes remain on how strictly it will be enforced and how long it will stay in place.
