Flour prices increase sharply

People across Pakistan are expected to face more financial pressure after a major increase in flour prices following the arrival of the new wheat crop. Flour mills have started supplying flour to grocery shopkeepers at higher rates from today. This is causing concern among citizens that are already struggling with rising living costs.

According to sources from flour mills, both 10kg and 20kg flour bags will now be available in the market at increased prices. Updated costs of flour will be increased by Rs115 for 10kg flour bag, taking its new price to Rs1020 and Rs200 rise for 20kg flour bag.

Flour mill representatives explained that the main reason behind the increase is the sharp rise in wheat prices. The price of wheat per maund has gone up from Rs3000 to Rs3600. This is usually because wheat is the main raw material used to produce flour. The increase has raised production costs for flour mills.

Previously, when wheat was available at Rs3000 per maund, a 10kg flour bag was being sold for Rs905, while a 20kg bag cost around Rs1810. However, after the increase flour mills adjusted flour prices accordingly.

Overall, the rise in flour prices is expected to increase the burden of inflation on the public, as many families are already facing difficulties managing daily household expenses. Citizens have called on the government to take action, control prices, and provide relief measures.

The increase came at the time when Pakistan’s inflation rate moved higher in April, exceeding official expectations and signalling renewed pressure on household budgets.

Data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics on Friday showed that headline inflation stood at 10.9 percent year-on-year in April 2026. The reading was notably above the Ministry of Finance’s earlier projection of 8 to 9 percent for the month.

The latest figure also marks a sharp increase from March, when inflation was recorded at 7.3 percent. A year earlier, in April 2025, inflation had remained very low at just 0.3 percent.

On a monthly basis, prices rose by 2.5 percent in April, picking up from a 1.2 percent increase in March. In contrast, prices had declined by 0.8 percent during the same month last year.
