The Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) is an identity document that is necessary for every Pakistani aged 18 or above. Every Pakistani can get their CNIC from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
This document proves a citizen’s identity, nationality and legal status in Pakistan.
Types of CNIC
NADRA currently issues three types of identity cards.
Computerised National Identity Card
It’s a standard Tehsil-based identity card which NADRA issued to adult citizens.
Smart CNIC
This identity card has a secure microchip, improved security features and longer durability.
CNIC with QR-code
It’s an advanced identity card with a QR code on it. This QR code will help to verify the cardholder’s data.
Eligibility
CNIC is issued to all Pakistanis of age 18 or above.
Requirements
- “Applicants must provide the identity card number of their parents or blood relatives. If they have no relatives, an ID holder can act as a biometric witness and submit Undertaking ‘B’ (for system-independent cases only).”
- “They must also submit a verified computerised birth certificate issued by the UC, Municipal Committee, or Cantonment Board, or provide a citizenship or naturalisation certificate.”
- “Authorities will verify the biometrics of a parent or blood relative

Earlier, Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority launched a new website to make the identity process easier for citizens.
As per the details, services like the identity card, NICOP, POC, and Family Registration Certificate (FRC) will be available on one portal.
Similarly, an advanced feature named the nGRIDS system will be available on the website, which will help to turn the data and statistics into a map form.
