ISLAMABAD: After a humiliating defeat by the Pakistani forces, India has cleared a massive $9 billion plan to modernise all of its three armed forces by acquiring advanced arms including the S-400 missiles.
The Army, Navy, and Air Force are set to receive major upgrades in equipment and firepower.
According to Indian media reports, the Army will get three key additions. The first is the Nag missile system, an indigenously developed anti-tank guided missile designed to destroy enemy armour.
The second is a ground-based mobile ELINT system, a truck-mounted radar network that can track and identify targets across borders.
The third involves high-mobility vehicles for rapid troop movement and supply transport.
The Indian Navy will get the landing platform docks, amphibious ships capable of carrying tanks, vehicles, and troops for sea-based operations.
The Navy will also induct 30mm naval guns and advanced lightweight torpedoes, boosting its maritime strike power.
The Indian Air Force will add futuristic systems such as Collaborative Long Range Target Saturation (COLTAS) drones, known as “swarm drones.”
These can take off, navigate, and strike targets independently with a range of over 1,000 kilometres.
Reports further suggest that India will purchase additional S-400 missiles from Russia to replenish its stock.
Some of the earlier missiles were destroyed during tensions with Pakistan, and the Air Force now aims to replace those units.
