Shreyas Iyer has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but his condition remains delicate, according to NDTV.
The injury occurred when Iyer took a running catch to dismiss Alex Carey. There, he ended up falling awkwardly and immediately clutching his ribs in pain.
Carey’s shot had gone high towards the backward point, with Iyer sprinting backwards to complete the catch before crashing onto the turf.

“He looks very uncomfortable,” Brendon Julian commented on Fox Cricket as Iyer was seen rolling on the ground in visible agony after landing heavily on his side.
Cricketer Shreyas Iyer’s Near-Fatal Injury
Following the incident, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the nature of his injury.
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region,” the statement read.
“He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI medical team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”
Iyer didn’t return to the field after the fall. He has been advised to stay in Sydney under medical supervision.
The board’s medical panel has readmitted him to the hospital as a precautionary measure after detecting internal bleeding in the rib cage.
“It’s a freak injury, and the medical team is in touch with the hospital. The medical team had advised him to be admitted again, as there was bleeding in his rib cage. We are expecting him to be fine later this week,” said a BCCI official.
The injury took place during the third ODI in Sydney on 25th October 2025.
Iyer’s career has been repeatedly interrupted by injuries. Earlier this year, he informed the board of his decision to take a break from red-ball cricket. He cited stiffness and fatigue in his back. The request was accepted by the BCCI.
The 30-year-old had played two innings on the tour before his injury, scoring 11 and 68 in Perth and Adelaide, respectively.
