PAA to Roll Out Cashless Payments at All Airports

The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has announced a nationwide shift to cashless airport services, beginning with Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore.

Under the plan, passengers and staff will pay for shops, restaurants, parking, and services using digital payments. Primarily QR code systems rolled out with support from the State Bank of Pakistan.

QR payments let travelers scan a code at the counter with a banking app or digital wallet to confirm the amount and pay instantly, no cash handling, no change required.

PAA says the move will speed up queues, reduce fraud, and create a traceable, transparent record of transactions for vendors and authorities.

In Phase 1, QR based payments launch at Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore in the coming weeks.

Similarly, in phase 2 expands to Faisalabad, Multan, and Sialkot, with the system then scaling to regional terminals.

All airport shops and service providers are being instructed to adopt compatible payment solutions so customers can reliably use digital options at every touch point.

Officials describe the initiative as part of a broader push to digitise airport operations. In addition, align with Pakistan’s national fintech vision, which promotes contactless, secure payments.

Moreover, PAA notes that while the long-term goal is a fully cashless experience, cash will still be accepted during the rollout.

Furthermore, travellers are encouraged not forced to switch to digital for convenience.

What this means for travelers: expect faster checkouts, less need to carry currency, and clearer receipts.

What it means for vendors: quicker settlements, reduced cash handling risks, and better insights from digital transaction data.

Pakistan’s airports are moving toward a modern, cashless ecosystem starting in major hubs and expanding nationwide in stages.
