Zohran Mamdani softens stance on new property taxes

Zohran Mamdani, Mayor of New York has backtracked on the promise of property tax hikes. He announced a city budget on Tuesday that will be seen by his critics as a climb down from his approach. However, his supporters will view it as a necessary compromise.

Mamdani who is 34 years old, got elected as the mayor of New York city in January. He got popular support for his democratic socialist policies that had included city run superstores, free bus travel. He also promised higher property taxes to help pay for all this.

However, the opposition faced from the state government and members of the city council apparently led Mamdani to pursue other measures to help plug New York’s budget deficit, which reached around $12 billion.

Mamdani had recently said that he wanted to raise property taxes for all owners by 9.5 per cent. This measure would have raised $3.7 billion but this measure needed the approval of both the centrist state governor and New York’s legislature.

Mamdani revealed that the $124.7 billion budget for the 2027 fiscal year had been balanced and will now go to the city council for a vote.

Mamdani said as he announced his first budget to the reporters, “This budget does not raise property taxes and it refuses to slash services”

“We pulled New York City back from an existential fiscal break.”

However, Mamdani can still claim a win because he earlier gained support for a new tax on second homes worth $5 million or more, called the “pied-a-terre tax.” This tax is expected to raise more than $500 million every year.

The remaining budget shortfall will be covered through other measures, including state approval for the city to reorganise pension plans and giving New York City more flexibility in managing public school class sizes.
