The sudden and steep hike of summer and repeat semester fee at Government College University Lahore has sparked serious student concern. They have termed the hike as unfair and expensive.
According to the students, the university administration has charged a fee of Rs15,000 per subject, up from Rs6,000, without informing them in advance.
This has now resulted in the case where students have to pay Rs30,000 to Rs45,000 or more to repeat two or three subjects, as their marks were insufficient in that subject.
The students reported significant problems they and their families are experiencing due to the shock of such a sudden rise in costs, especially when they are already struggling to cope with inflation and the economic pressures.
Many said that such a big announcement should have first been made much earlier and that there should have been an explanation given by the university authorities about it.
They said that the steep hikes in fees would make higher education inaccessible to many deserving students.
The impacted students have appealed to the university administration and relevant authorities for reconsideration and give them relief.
They emphasised students’ needs instead of adding to their financial burdens.
In the meantime, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) have issued an important public advisory regarding documentation deadlines.
The authority has advised citizens to finish essential activities by June 30th, 2026, citing the possibility of further fees and penalties following the next federal budget (2026-27).
NADRA particularly called the people to renew their expired Computerised National Identity Card (CNICs) before this date to avoid additional fees.
The authority also reiterated the need for the registration of children, calling on parents to ensure their children are registered under B-Form system immediately.
