Raja Bazaar, Commercial Market revamping to complete by May 30

The revamping and beautification work in Raja Bazaar and Commercial Market is expected to be completed by May 30, as authorities continue efforts to transform the historic business hubs under the Sohna Punjab Programme.

According to details, around 60 per cent of the underground cabling and beautification work has already been completed by the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation, while the formal inauguration is likely to take place in June by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

The project, estimated to cost Rs875 million, aims to give a modern yet traditional look to both commercial centres. However, officials say the overall cost may increase as work progresses.

Authorities said residents and traders would witness a major transformation in Raja Bazaar and Commercial Market by June. Underground cabling work from Fawara Chowk to Dingi Khoi Chowk and nearby commercial areas has already been completed, while beautification activities are continuing at a fast pace.

As part of the project, decorative arches inspired by traditional architecture are being built in front of shops using small red bricks. The scheme also includes facade restoration of old buildings, renovation work, installation of uniform signboards, construction of walking areas with tuff tiles, footpaths, public washrooms, seating benches, decorative lights, and plantation of flowers and greenery.

Officials said Raja Bazaar is expected to be opened as a pedestrian-friendly walking street by May 30 on the pattern of Bank Road Saddar.

Meanwhile, underground cabling and utility shifting work in Commercial Market has also been completed, with beautification work continuing rapidly in the area.

Punjab CM Maryam inaugurates ‘Marka-e-Haq Square’

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz earlier inaugurated the newly renamed ‘Marka-e-Haq Square’ at the historic Kutchery Chowk in Rawalpindi as part of the Signal-Free Rawalpindi project.

The inauguration also marked a major milestone in the city’s infrastructure development, with authorities completing five underpasses, two overhead bridges, and pedestrian bridges in a record 179 days.

According to officials, the project was initially scheduled to be completed in 190 days but was finished 11 days ahead of deadline. Authorities have described it as Pakistan’s first fast-track and uniquely designed infrastructure project. During the ceremony, Kutchery Chowk was officially renamed ‘Marka-e-Haq Square’.
