Argentina’s national football team have officially unveiled their 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup 2026, with captain Lionel Messi included despite ongoing fitness concerns.
Messi, who will turn 39 during the tournament year, headlines the squad announced by the Argentine Football Association. The global showpiece will mark the veteran forward’s sixth FIFA World Cup appearance, further extending his historic international career.
Seventeen players from the squad that defeated the France national football team in Qatar four years ago to win the World Cup have retained their places in the team.
Argentina head into the tournament dealing with several injury concerns. Messi was unable to complete his previous match for Inter Miami CF because of fatigue and a strain in his left hamstring.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez has also been included in the squad despite suffering a fractured finger on his right hand during the UEFA Europa League Final last week.
It is worth mentioning here that Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time, sparked injury concerns among football fans after experiencing discomfort during Inter Miami CF’s American League clash. The Argentine superstar requested to be substituted before leaving the field, raising fears over his fitness.
The incident took place during a match against the Philadelphia Union, where the rain-soaked pitch made conditions difficult for the players.
In the 73rd minute, Messi was seen holding the back of his left leg and was immediately taken off the field. However, he appeared to be walking normally as he headed toward the dugout.
Later, the team coach said the issue did not initially appear to be serious and that Messi had been rested as a precaution.
