An unusual surge in flour prices in Lahore, the provincial capital, has increased difficulties for citizens already struggling with inflation.
According to sources, the maximum rate of wheat in Lahore is approximately Rs 4,000 per maund.
However, private companies are reportedly selling flour at prices ranging between Rs 7,200 and Rs 8,000 per maund, placing an additional financial burden on consumers.
Several private brands and companies are also selling flour at rates as high as Rs 200 per kilogram. Meanwhile, a 5-kilogram flour bag is being sold for up to Rs 1,000 in the local market, further worsening the situation for households.
The sharp increase in prices has raised concerns among citizens, who believe the rise is disproportionate to the actual cost of wheat. They argue that the difference between wheat procurement prices and flour retail rates reflects excessive profiteering by certain market players.
Residents of Lahore have expressed frustration over the continuous increase in essential food prices, saying that flour, a basic necessity, is becoming increasingly unaffordable for low- and middle-income families. Many have urged the concerned authorities to take immediate notice of the situation and regulate prices to provide relief to the public.
Citizens have also called for strict monitoring of private companies and flour mills to prevent artificial inflation and ensure fair pricing in the market. They stressed that the government should intervene to stabilise the situation and protect consumers from further financial pressure.

Alongside the rising cost of food items in Lahore, chicken meat and eggs are also being sold at prices higher than the government-approved rates, creating difficulties for residents, particularly low-income households.
According to the official price list, chicken meat is priced at Rs. 475 per kilogram. However, in the open market, it is being sold for Rs500 to Rs520 per kilogram, forcing consumers to pay an additional Rs25 to Rs30 per kilogram.
