NBA Finals opener to kick off with San Antonio Spurs against NY Knicks

The New York Knicks, champions of the NBA Eastern Conference, will face off against the San Antonio Spurs, who are led by Victor Wembanyama, the Kia Defensive Player of the Year in the upcoming NBA Finals.

This matchup is significant as it marks the Knicks’ first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1999 and their first ever on ABC, while the Spurs are making their sixth NBA Finals appearance on the same network.

It also represents Wembanyama’s first NBA Finals, coming three years after he was the top pick in the 2023 draft.

The 22-year-old French player has displayed a crucial role in transforming the Spurs’ performance, helping them improve from 22 wins in his rookie season and 34 last year to an impressive 62 wins this season.

San Antonio carried this momentum into the playoffs, reaching the finals after a thrilling game-seven victory over the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, on Saturday.

During the postseason, Wembanyama has been outstanding, averaging 23.2 points, 10.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 3.5 blocks per game.

Jalen Brunson in the NY Knicks lineup spotlight

The Knicks’ starting lineup features All-Star guard Jalen Brunson, who is averaging nearly 27 points in the playoffs. Karl-Anthony Towns has been consistent with a double-double average, while Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart have also made significant contributions.

New York enters the finals with a longer rest period after sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers 4-0 in the Eastern Conference finals on May 25.

In contrast, San Antonio had to battle through a tough seven-game series against Oklahoma City.

The NBA Tip-Off, presented by American Express, will kick off the game coverage with a 90-minute pregame show, airing on ESPN and ABC on all game nights.

Following the NBA Finals games, Inside the NBA, presented by Eli Lilly, will typically air on ESPN. If there is a Game 5 on Saturday, June 13, Inside the NBA will start on ABC and then move to ESPN.
