Punjab launches province-wide crackdown on token tax defaulters

The Punjab Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department has launched a province-wide crackdown on vehicle owners who have failed to pay their token tax.

To recover outstanding dues before the close of the financial year, authorities have warned defaulters of strict action, including a 100% penalty on unpaid taxes and the impoundment of vehicles. Officials have urged vehicle owners to clear their dues immediately to avoid legal action.

Director General (DG) Excise, Umar Sher Chatha, stated that non-payment of token tax will not be tolerated under any circumstances. He urged all defaulters to clear their dues immediately, warning that strict legal action will be taken against those who fail to comply.

As part of a province-wide special operation, vehicles with unpaid token taxes will be seized on the spot. Strict action will also be taken against unregistered vehicles. To support the campaign, checking and raid operations have been intensified in all districts.

The DG further revealed that the department collected more than Rs 70 billion in revenue during the first 11 months of the current financial year, exceeding the total revenue collected during the previous financial year by Rs 15 billion.

According to official data, Rs 40 billion was collected through motor vehicle taxes, while Rs 25 billion came from property taxes. Authorities have described this achievement as a record performance.

Meanwhile, the department has also decided to take strict action against property tax defaulters. Commercial properties may be sealed if owners fail to pay outstanding dues, while attachment notices will be issued to residential property owners under the Land Revenue Act.

In addition, field officers have been instructed to strengthen enforcement efforts and improve the collection of professional tax and excise duty.

Officials stated that this campaign represents one of the most comprehensive and stringent operations against tax defaulters undertaken in recent years.
