Under-trial prisoner escapes from hospital in Rawalpindi

Two police officials and two other persons have been booked after a convicted prisoner who was shifted from Adiala Jail to Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH) for treatment escaped on Wednesday night. After which, a case of the incident was registered at Waris Khan police station.

According to the police, the escaped accused has been identified as Jamil, who was arrested in a drug smuggling case and convicted by the court.

The reports further add that police ASI Imran Ahmed and Constable Qamar Ali, who were posted on duty, have also been named.

According to the FIR, the escaped accused was taken out of the ward by his son, Adnan and an unknown person in a wheelchair. Later, the accused, who was undergoing treatment, was put in a car and fled the scene.

According to the police, a case of drug smuggling was registered against the accused last year in the Counter Narcotics Force, Punjab.

The court had sentenced the accused Jamil to 9 years in prison after he was found guilty of drug smuggling, while a fine of Rs180,000 was also imposed.

Initial reports

According to the initial reports, the Sub Inspector, Zahid Iqbal, and his team were conducting a routine check on prisoners who were receiving treatment at the hospital. Police personnel were also present to guard the suspects.

When they reached Surgical Ward 9, they found that the under-trial prisoner involved in a drug case was missing from the ward.

An inquiry and CCTV review later showed that the accused, along with his son and another unidentified person, left the ward at around 6:15 PM.

According to the reports, the footage showed the accused being taken out of the hospital on a wheelchair and placed into a private car.

Police further said that the accused’s son and another man helped move him from the hospital. Reports further add that the two police officials on duty allowed the escape.

Authorities further said that the accused and the negligent police officials have been booked. The two police officials have also been suspended.

Ex-ADCR who escaped from police custody, arrested

Back in November 2025, Former additional deputy commissioner revenue (ADCR) Iqbal Sanghera, who escaped from police custody while being transported to Lahore, was arrested again.

The police sources revealed that a special unit of the Rawalpindi Police tracked Sanghera and detained him.

Ex-ADCR, who was wanted in a Rawalpindi corruption case, was being shifted to Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail.

It is important to mention here that the additional deputy commissioner of revenue had been accused of multiple corruption cases.

He escaped from police custody while being transported to Lahore. It prompted the Chakri police to register a case against four police officials.

According to the reports, the escape occurred during a stop at the Chakri interchange rest area along the motorway.
