Shreyas Iyer emerges as front-runner for India T20 captaincy

India T20 leadership debate heats up as Iyer emerges as key candidate

A major change in the leadership of India’s T20 team could be on the horizon, according to media reports.

The T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav is reportedly under scrutiny and may be removed from the captaincy, with questions also being raised over his place in the squad due to a dip in form.

Fresh reports suggest that Shreyas Iyer is being considered as the leading candidate to take over the T20 captaincy, potentially replacing Suryakumar Yadav in the role.

However, no official confirmation has been made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) or the selectors so far, and the developments remain based on media speculation.

The Indian selectors are reportedly devising a new strategy with an eye on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the upcoming T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in Australia and New Zealand later this year.

Reports indicate that the squad for the upcoming T20 series against Ireland and England will be announced on Saturday.

Suryakumar Yadav’s place in the squad is also said to be under threat following a series of disappointing performances. He failed to make a significant impact in both the 2026 T20 World Cup and the IPL season.

In contrast, Shreyas Iyer has impressed with both his batting and leadership over the past two IPL seasons. He captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and has played a key role in guiding various teams to major finals.

Meanwhile, 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi is expected to receive his maiden call-up to the Indian national team.

The young star scored 776 runs in IPL 2026 with an aggressive batting approach, earning widespread praise for his exceptional talent and potential.
