International hockey returns to Pakistan after 24 years

Pakistan hockey team completes preparations for Pro Hockey League

The sport of hockey is coming back to Pakistan after 24 years of absence, and it will be very crucial for the revival of the sport in Pakistan.

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has been informed that the South Korean Hockey Federation (SHF) has accepted to dispatch their hockey team to Pakistan, the federation said in detail.

South Korea will be the first senior international team to visit Pakistan in over 20 years.

The Pakistan vs South Korea series will be held in Islamabad in July.

As both teams hold talks to finalise logistics and match arrangements, the final schedule for the matches would be finalised in next 2-3 days, said PHF President Muhiuddin Wani.

One thing to take note of is that the junior team from Germany, which was also accompanied by the Netherlands and Germany clubs, visited Pakistan in 2024.

This, however, will be the first time in 24 years that a senior national hockey team is coming to Pakistan and that instills a sense of confidence in Pakistan as one of the safe destinations for international sports.

In the meantime, the Pakistan national hockey team is also preparing for the Pro Hockey League.

The team will leave Karachi for Belgium on June 9 under Imad Butt’s leadership and Manzoor ul Hassan will be the head coach.

Pakistan will play two games against each of Belgium, Spain, England and India from June 13-27.

During the Lahore training camp, the PHF has reportedly provided better facilities to the players, including coaching and logistics.

Pakistan recently continued its good form by winning the bronze medal in the Under-18 Hockey Asia Cup in Japan over Malaysia.
