Sweden has introduced a special residence permit known as the High Talent Visa, allowing highly qualified non-European Union nationals, including Pakistanis, to move to the country to explore employment opportunities or assess the possibility of launching a business.
The visa enables eligible applicants to stay in Sweden for up to nine months while searching for work or evaluating business prospects. Applicants must apply from outside Sweden and the permit can only be granted for a period covered by the validity of their passport.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, applicants must possess an academic qualification equivalent to a Swedish second-cycle degree. Accepted credentials include master’s degrees, professional degrees, MPhil qualifications, PhDs and other comparable postgraduate qualifications. Pakistani degrees may also be considered if they meet the required academic standards.
Applicants must additionally demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support themselves throughout their stay. The minimum financial requirement is 13,000 Swedish kronor per month. Those seeking the maximum nine-month permit must therefore show access to at least 117,000 kronor, along with funds to cover their return travel expenses.
Comprehensive health insurance is also mandatory. The policy must cover routine and emergency medical treatment, hospitalisation, emergency dental care and medical repatriation.
Application Process and Costs
The application fee for the High Talent Visa is 2,200 Swedish kronor. Authorities state that approximately 75 per cent of complete applications are processed within seven months, although applications requiring additional information may take longer.
Required documents include a valid passport, educational certificates and transcripts, proof of financial means, health insurance documents and a consent form authorising the Swedish Council for Higher Education to verify academic qualifications. Any documents not issued in English or Swedish must be accompanied by certified translations.
Applications can be submitted online through Sweden’s migration system. Applicants may also be asked to verify their identity, provide biometric data and attend an appointment at a Swedish embassy or consulate.
Successful applicants who secure employment in Sweden must obtain a work permit before starting long term employment. Similarly, individuals intending to establish a business must apply separately for a residence permit designed for self employed persons.
