11th mpox case detected in Karachi, patient placed in isolation

The health authorities confirmed another mpox case in Karachi, while the total cases of mpox in Karachi now stand at 11.

The officials of hospital said a 35 year old man from Mohabbat Nagar in Landhi was found positive for the virus and was shifted to the isolation ward of Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital (SIDH) NIPA.

The individual had visited the hospital on Saturday with signs and symptoms of mpox. After a medical examination and a lab test the infection was confirmed by the use of PCR.

Authorities said the patient hasn’t travelled recently nor is there any indication of local transmission.

With the latest case, the number of mpox patients treated at SIDH NIPA has increased to eight.

It is coming days after another case of mpox was reported in Karachi. A 40-year-old Gulistan-e-Johar resident had also been tested positive for the virus and had been sent to an isolation ward of the same hospital.

The patient also didn’t have any recent travel history, health officials said, and the infection was detected using PCR testing.

Authorities are keeping a close watch on patients and carrying out proper monitoring to prevent its spread.

Citizens are asked to seek immediate medical attention if they have symptoms associated with mpox.

Mpox is a viral infection that can be transmitted from person-to-person through close contact with an infected person, animal or material that is contaminated.

Fever, headache, body pain, fatigue, and the typical skin rash are common symptoms.

The 2022-23 spread of the disease around the world has made it a global outbreak and is still being watched closely by health authorities around the world.
