The federal government has decided to suspend a proposed 5 per cent increase in Karachi Port tariffs for the fiscal year 2026-27. This move is expected to provide relief of more than Rs500 million to importers and exporters across Pakistan.
According to Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar, the decision was made to support economic activity, strengthen the country’s businesses and trade sector. He explained that the move is in line with the Prime Minister’s Blue Economy vision, which aims to develop Pakistan’s maritime industry.
The minister stated that keeping Karachi Port Trust tariffs unchanged will help reduce operational expenses for traders, manufacturers, and industrialists who rely heavily on imports and exports.
Junaid Anwar added that the government remains committed to introducing practical policies that promote exports and expand trade opportunities. He said that supporting businesses is a vital part of improving Pakistan’s overall economic performance.
Karachi Port plays a critical role in the national economy because it handles the majority of Pakistan’s seaborne trade. Any increase in port tariffs directly affects importers, exporters, and industries that depend on raw materials brought into the country through shipping routes.
Businesses have already been dealing with rising logistics expenses and higher financing costs in recent years. Therefore, the decision to freeze tariffs is expected to ease some of the financial pressure faced by companies and traders. The government believes that avoiding additional charges at the port will help businesses manage their expenses more effectively.
Karachi Port sets new record of highest-ever container handling
Admiral Shahid Ahmed said that Karachi Port is playing an important role in the national economy and maritime trade. The port has set a new national record in container handling, with more than 2.651 million TEUs handled before the end of the financial year.
According to the Minister for Maritime Affairs, this record performance reflects strong business confidence in the maritime sector. Junaid Anwar stated that this historic achievement is the result of the tireless efforts of KPT officers and workers. The Chairman of KPT noted that port reforms and modern infrastructure have led to a significant increase in cargo traffic.
