Switzerland beat Canada to top group B

Switzerland Canada

On Wednesday, the Switzerland team dominated Canada with a 2-1 win in their group B match at the stadium in Vancouver.

The outcome enabled Switzerland to register another historic success by tying to top the group table with seven points.

It also enabled Canada to qualify for the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time in history.

Both sides knew that if they would win this game, they would be the first in the group to advance and may get a better opponent in the knockout stage.

There were opportunities for both sides in the first half, but neither team could score before the break.

Switzerland was in control, shortly after the break. Johan Manzambi’s pass found Ruben Vargas, and he scored the first goal just a couple of minutes in when he took the ball at close range.

Just 10 minutes later, Manzambi doubled Switzerland’s lead, taking advantage of a mistake by the Canadian goalkeeper to score his third goal of the tournament.

Canada was two goals down, but pressed for a comeback.

They were rewarded for their efforts in the 75th minute when substitute Promise David followed Nathan Saliba’s pass with a well-placed strike to make it 2-1.

The goal gave Canada hope and put an edgy finish to the match. However Switzerland played strongly and it was only for an equaliser that they would have taken the top spot in the group.

Canada’s loss did not put their effort to rest as they are runners up in the group and advanced to the last 32. This has become best World Cup campaign in the country’s history.

Switzerland advanced to the knockout stage as the group winner and will now play one of the top third-placed teams in the tournament.
