Met office shares latest update on rain across Pakistan

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued its latest weather update, forecasting rain and thunderstorms in several parts of the country as monsoon activity strengthens.

According to the Met Office, partly cloudy weather with isolated rain-windstorms and thunderstorms is expected in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Friday. Officials said rainfall is likely to continue in both cities after showers on Thursday morning lowered the temperature to 34°C.

Rainfall recorded in Rawalpindi included 4mm at Katchury, 3mm at Chaklala, 2mm each at Pirwadhai and Shamsabad, and 1mm at Kattarian. In Islamabad, 2mm of rain was recorded at Zero Point and 1mm at Golra.

The PMD said moist currents from the Arabian Sea are penetrating the central and southern parts of the country, while a shallow westerly wave is expected to affect central regions. A seasonal low-pressure area also persists over north Balochistan.

Although mainly hot and dry weather is expected across most parts of Pakistan, isolated rain-windstorms and thunderstorms are likely in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeast and south Punjab, northeast and south Balochistan, Kashmir and adjoining hilly areas.

Meanwhile, the monsoon weather system has entered Pakistan, raising the likelihood of rainfall in Lahore and several districts of Punjab. The provincial capital experienced cloudy skies, gusty winds and light drizzle since Friday morning.

The Met Office has forecast rain in Lahore, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Chakwal, Rawalpindi and several other districts of Punjab.

In anticipation of the expected monsoon spell, authorities have placed the Municipal Corporation, WASA, Lahore Waste Management Company and other relevant departments on alert to ensure preparedness and timely response.

The minimum temperature in Lahore was recorded at 26°C, while the maximum is expected to reach 38°C.

Earlier, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had issued a three-day weather forecast for Karachi for June 24-26, warning of partly cloudy to misty and humid weather, including the observance of 9th and 10th Muharram.

There are also some chances for showers and winds from time to time during the forecast period in isolated areas of the city.
