The federal government has approved a reduction in customs duties on imported vehicles. It is expected to lower the prices of imported 660cc Japanese cars and several other vehicle types. This decision was introduced through the Finance Bill 2026 and aims to gradually ease import tariffs.
Imported vehicles with engine capacities up to 850cc, including the popular 660cc Japanese cars, are expected to become more affordable. The reduction in customs duties is likely to provide relief to buyers who have faced rising vehicle prices over the past few years. Specialised industrialists believe that if importers pass the savings on to consumers, demand for imported compact cars could increase significantly.
Moreover, the latest tariff schedule also introduces major reductions for larger imported vehicles. Regulatory duty on vehicles with engine capacities between 1801cc and 3000cc has been reduced substantially, while the duty on vehicles above 3000cc has been removed altogether. However, some engine categories, particularly 1001cc, 1300cc, 1601cc, and 1800cc, will see a slight increase in regulatory duties. However, hybrid and electric vehicles remain unaffected by these changes.
The government says these revisions will gradually reduce import barriers over the coming years. The new policy will encourage greater competition in the automobile market while aligning the country’s trade framework with long term economic reforms.
For consumers, Japanese 660cc vehicles are among the most sought-after imported cars in Pakistan because of their fuel efficiency, compact size and relatively lower running costs. Any reduction in import duties is therefore expected to improve affordability and expand buyer interest. Overall, the revised customs duties are widely expected to reduce the overall cost of eligible imported vehicles.
On the other hand, Apple has once again increased the prices of many MacBook and iPad models due to a rise in semiconductor costs. The company has confirmed that the decision had to be taken.
Now, the MacBook Air starts at $1299, costing $200 more, while MacBook Pro has seen a sharp increase of $300, now at $1999. In Pakistan, according to the open market rate $280, this may turn into a Rs84000 increase in prices.
