Karachi Port sets another record with arrival of mega container ship

Karachi Port has reached another milestone as one of the world’s largest container ships successfully docks after the port’s record-breaking cargo handling achievement.

According to the Karachi Port Trust (KPT), the MSC Loreto is a 400-metre-long container vessel with a carrying capacity of 24,346 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). The ship has arrived at Karachi Port and is scheduled to unload 3,802 containers.

KPT stated that the successful berthing of the vessel at the South Asia Pakistan Terminal (SAPT) deepwater terminal reflects the growing capacity of Karachi Port and its world-class port infrastructure.

Officials said the development demonstrates that Karachi Port is now fully equipped to safely, efficiently, and effectively handle some of the world’s largest container ships using modern port facilities.

It is worth mentioning here that yesterday, the Minister for Maritime Affairs announced that the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has recorded the highest annual cargo handling volume in its 138-year history.

In recent months, Pakistani ports, particularly KPT, have emerged as a key regional trading hub as global shipping lines redirected vessels to Pakistan following disruptions caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz during the US-Iran conflict. The diversion led to an unprecedented increase in transhipment activity at Karachi’s ports.

According to the minister, KPT’s cargo handling during the current fiscal year (FY2025-26) has surpassed its previous record of 54.685 million tonnes, which was achieved in FY2017-18.
