Punjab Local Roads Program transforms rural areas

The Punjab government has accelerated work under the Chief Minister Punjab Local Roads Program, with the initiative aimed at improving rural connectivity, facilitating economic activity and enhancing transportation across the province.

Officials said the construction of rural roads is transforming access between villages and urban centres, enabling faster transportation of agricultural produce while providing safer and smoother travel for residents.

Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique said Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed authorities to expand the scope of the model villages programme to 7,500 villages in future phases. He added that planning for the upcoming phases should be based on the experience and challenges encountered during the implementation of the first phase.

According to official figures in May 2026, 224 kilometres of rural roads are being constructed in Khanewal through 161 development schemes.

In Multan, work is underway on 135 kilometres of rural roads under 70 development schemes.

Lodhran has been allocated 484 kilometres of rural roads through 21 development schemes, while Vehari is receiving 124 kilometres of roads under 96 development schemes.

The provincial government says the programme will improve connectivity, boost rural development and strengthen the transport network linking villages with major towns and cities across Punjab.

The Punjab government has taken another step forward to enhance the public transportation system and encourage eco-friendly travel by expanding the province’s electric bus network, which now includes the Green Bus Service in six new districts under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

The new phase will include Attock, Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Khanewal and Khushab, which will provide modern public transport facilities in additional communities of Punjab.

The air-conditioned electric buses will have a flat fare of Rs20, making it affordable for commuters in Punjab, the government said.

Maryam Nawaz expressed optimism that the Green Bus Service will be expanded to offer safe, comfortable and modern transportation for the people of the province during the launch.
