To promote compliance with the law, and reduce the number of motorcyclists without helmets on the road, the Lahore Traffic Police (LTP) has intensified its efforts against those motorcyclists who are still not wearing helmets. The Lahore Traffic Police (LTP) has upped its enforcement on the violation of the helmet law following a survey based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) that revealed that the vast majority of motorcyclists are wearing helmets, leaving only a small number who are yet to do so.
The new policy sets The Mall, Jail Road, Canal Road, and the Cantonment as no entry zones for motorcycles without helmets. The raids would be rolled out gradually on the roads on the radiating road network to make them safer and reduce traffic fatalities, officials said.
Based on the first AI-powered survey of helmet compliance by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) camera network at 17 key intersections across Lahore, the decision was taken.
The performance of the AI system to detect motorcycle riders wearing helmets was found to be 97.11%, meaning that 256,473 out of the 264,112 motorcycles recorded were wearing helmets, CTO Abdul Rahim Shirazi said. Only 7,639 were found to be in violation of the regulations, he added.
The high compliance rate demonstrates the public’s increased awareness of road safety, which allows the authorities to be tough on the limited number of riders who are still ignoring the compulsory helmet laws, the CTO said.
The expanded enforcement campaign will help to enhance roadway safety and save lives, he added, noting that the 40% reduction in serious head injuries among motorcyclists in the area has already been seen due to increased helmet use.
