‘US should back Pakistan’s push to blacklist BLA at UN’

The Diplomat article titled “Why the US Should Back Pakistan in Blacklisting BLA in the UNSC” says the United States should support Pakistan’s push to blacklist the BLA at the United Nations (UN).

According to The Diplomat, the BLA and its Majeed Brigade pose a serious threat to regional security because they continue to operate from safe havens in Afghanistan. The publication said these safe havens remain a major challenge to peace in the region.

The report said Pakistan and China jointly approached the United Nations to push for the BLA to be placed on the UN sanctions list.

Their purpose was to increase diplomatic and financial pressure on the group at the international level.

It also noted that the United States has already designated the BLA and Majeed Brigade as terrorist organisations. Because of this, questions have been raised over Washington’s reported opposition to adding the group to the UN sanctions list.
