Are direct flights being resumed between Pakistan-US?

'Pakistan, US share great partnership', Natalie Baker

The United States’ top diplomat in Pakistan has expressed support for the restoration of direct flights between Pakistan and the US, saying the move would strengthen tourism, educational exchanges, sports diplomacy, and professional cooperation.

Speaking in a podcast, US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie A. Baker said she hopes direct air links between the two countries will resume in the future, making travel easier for students, researchers, experts, and tourists.

Direct flights were suspended after Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was barred from operating to the US following the 2020 Karachi plane crash and subsequent concerns over pilot licensing. Although PIA resumed flights to Europe and the UK after restrictions were lifted, it is still not permitted to operate flights to the United States.

Baker’s remarks come amid improving ties between Islamabad and Washington, following Pakistan’s recent diplomatic efforts that contributed to an interim peace agreement between the United States and Iran.

Pakistan has been actively seeking the resumption of direct flights. In May, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi discussed the matter with US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Paul Kapoor, emphasising Pakistan’s desire to restart direct air services at the earliest opportunity.

Officials believe restoring direct flights would not only improve travel between the two countries but also enhance Pakistan’s international aviation credibility.
