Propaganda narratives about 27th Constitutional Amendment busted

27th Constitutional Amendment

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has prepared a draft for the Pakistan 27th Constitutional Amendment, which suggests big changes in the country’s judicial, military, and administrative systems.

As the country begins to make major reforms to empower institutions, the anti state propaganda machine takes to social media and disseminate misinformation and disinformation.

However, the fake news across the social media platforms fails to buy the public attention.

Here’s a take on busting these false information and propaganda,

“It’s a power grab by the establishment.”

Fact: It’s not about seizing control — it’s about institutional improvement.
The amendment proposes a Constitutional Court to handle constitutional disputes swiftly, allowing the Supreme Court to focus on appellate work and legal precedents.

“It weakens judicial independence.”

Fact: It actually strengthens judicial independence through structure.
Standardizing judicial postings and tenures, it eliminates favouritism and personal influence, ensuring that independence becomes a norm, not a privilege.

“It reverses provincial autonomy and rolls back the 18th Amendment.”

Fact: The NFC Award review is about financial balance, not centralization.
The federation isn’t reclaiming powers — it’s closing the revenue–expenditure gap to make devolution sustainable in practice, not just in theory.

“Changes to Article 243 will politicize the Army.”

Fact: The revision modernizes concepts of command, not the hierarchy of command.
It aligns Pakistan’s defence framework with modern warfare’s demand for jointness and synergy between civil and military planning to keep up with moderen warfare command structure as is the case with China, India and other armies of the world.— and this too within constitutional limits.

“It’s designed to weaken the Election Commission.”

Fact: It actually empowers the Election Commission.
By ending political deadlocks in appointments through clear timelines and a neutral nomination process, the amendment aims to make the ECP more autonomous and effective.

“Restoring magisterial powers revives old executive control.”

Fact: It’s a targeted administrative fix, not a return to old systems.
Limited magisterial authority under judicial oversight will help resolve minor disputes faster, bringing accessible justice closer to the people.

“It’s a revolutionary overhaul of the entire system.”

Fact: The 27th Amendment is evolution, not revolution.
It marks Pakistan’s maturity phase in constitutional governance, strengthening institutions for performance, not redistributing power.

Amendment in the Constitution

A constitutional amendment, also called a constitutional alteration, is a change to the constitution of a polity, organisation or other type of entity.

Amendments are often added to the relevant sections of an existing constitution, directly altering the text.

One of the main proposals this time is to create a Constitutional Court that will handle cases about the interpretation of the Constitution. This new court will replace the current Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court.

The chief justice of the Constitutional Court will also lead the Supreme Judicial Council and the Judicial Commission, instead of the Chief Justice of Pakistan. But there are other proposed reforms as well.
