Zohran Mumdani-Murtaza Wahab: Sindh CM compares New York, Karachi Mayors

KARACHI: After Zohran Mumdani’s historic win in New York mayoral election, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah compared him with Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab.

During his address to a summit, CM Murad said that the “change that started from Karachi has now reached New York.”

He said that New York elected 34-year-old first Muslim mayor Zohran Mamdani, and Karachi had also chosen a young mayor several years ago.

“The change that started from Karachi city and it got to New York,” Sindh CM added.

Zohran Mamdani becomes New York’s first Muslim mayor

It is pertinent to mention here that Zohran Mamdani became the first Muslim mayor of New York; the largest city in the United States after historic win.

According to the international media outlet CBS, Mamdani received 677,615 votes (49.6 per cent) against 568,488 (41.6pc) for former New York governor Andrew Cuomo and 108,377 (7.9pc) for Curtis Sliwa.

Zohran Mamdani, a Democrat and self-declared socialist, has drawn national attention as he creates history with his win.

The race has become one of the most closely watched political contests in the country. The stakes are so high that President Donald Trump has now fully supported efforts to defeat Mamdani after months of mixed statements, reports say.

Mamdani is an American politician and democratic socialist who serves as a member of the New York State Assembly for the 36th District in Queens.

The 34-year-old was born in Uganda and raised in New York City. He is the Democratic nominee in the election and is running against former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.

In a recent emotional speech, Mamdani defended his Muslim identity, calling attacks against him “racist and baseless.”

Mamdani defeated Cuomo in the Democratic primary in June to become the party’s official nominee.

He has promised to “lower costs and make life easier” for New Yorkers, saying the city has become “too expensive.”

His key plans include freezing rent for all stabilised tenants, building more housing, and making city buses free and faster with new priority lanes and better traffic management.

He also promises free childcare for all children aged six weeks to five years and plans to open city-owned grocery stores to keep food prices low.

His campaign says he has a clear plan to pay for all these proposals.
