The government of Punjab has decided to install Artificial Intelligence (AI) labs in the schools across the province.

The Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board (PCTB) has approved the introduction of an artificial intelligence (AI) course for primary school students, with the programme set to begin from 2027, officials have said.

The AI course will initially be introduced as a separate subject for students from Grades 1 to 5.

Officials said the first phase of the initiative will focus on adding AI to the primary school curriculum, while the second phase will include the establishment of AI and science laboratories in schools to provide students with practical learning opportunities.

To support the programme, the provincial government plans to recruit qualified educators on a contract basis, as government schools currently lack teachers with specialised expertise in artificial intelligence.

Officials said the proposal received approval during the board’s latest meeting and will be included in future textbook publications.

They added that if funding constraints arise, the government has prepared an alternative plan under which basic AI concepts would be incorporated into existing science textbooks instead of being introduced as a separate subject.

The initiative is part of the Punjab government’s efforts to introduce emerging technologies into the education system and equip students with digital skills from an early age.
