The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has advised the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to deal with the case concerning Geo News in accordance with its existing rules and regulations.
A letter has been sent from the Council to the PEMRA’s Council of Complaints Lahore regarding the case related to the channel’s alleged religious portrayal.
According to the media reports, the Council has recommended that the matter involving the licensed television channel be decided under PEMRA’s legal and regulatory framework.
The final decision on any action against the broadcaster will be made in accordance with PEMRA laws.
The Council is said to have maintained its earlier guidance on the religious aspects of the case while leaving the legal and administrative decision to the relevant regulatory authority.
The letter said that the Council confined its role to its constitutional and advisory mandate and did not intervene in PEMRA’s statutory powers.
The letter also emphasised that the case should be decided through the prescribed legal process, including the examination of evidence, hearings and application of the relevant regulations, rather than through immediate or emotional action.
According to the sources, the Council’s position seeks to ensure that religious guidance is provided by the Council of Islamic Ideology, while decisions on licensing, the media code of conduct and regulatory action remain the responsibility of PEMRA.
