Cricket legend Sir Garfield Sobers no more, dies at 89

West Indies cricket legend Sir Garfield Sobers has passed away at the age of 89. Sir Garfield Sobers, the legendary West Indies all-rounder and widely regarded as one of the greatest cricketers in history, has passed away at the age of 89.

During his illustrious career, Sir Sobers played 93 Test matches for the West Indies, scoring more than 8,000 runs and taking 235 wickets.

In first-class cricket, he featured in 383 matches, amassing over 28,000 runs and claiming more than 1,000 wickets.

Sir Garfield Sobers was also the first cricketer in history to hit six sixes in a single over, a feat he achieved in first-class cricket in 1968.

Sir Sobers was celebrated as one of cricket’s finest all-rounders, renowned for his elegant left-handed batting and exceptional versatility with the ball.

One of the defining moments of his career came in 1958 when he scored an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan, setting a new world record for the highest individual score in Test cricket. The landmark innings remained unbeaten as a world record for 36 years.

Equally effective as a bowler, Sobers mastered both pace and spin, making him one of the most complete cricketers the game has ever produced.

He also enjoyed a successful county career with Nottinghamshire, where, in 1968, he became the first player in first-class cricket to hit six sixes in a single over, an achievement that remains one of the sport’s most iconic milestones.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to cricket, Sobers was knighted in 1975. He was later honoured as one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the 20th Century, cementing his legacy among the sport’s all-time greats.

Nottinghamshire announced that a special tribute to Sir Garry Sobers will be held before their T20 Blast semi-final against Hampshire at Edgbaston on Saturday. The club remembered him as “cricket’s greatest-ever all-rounder” and an iconic figure in its history.
