ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet has approved the draft of the 27th Constitutional Amendment. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired the meeting via video link from Baku, Azerbaijan.
The meeting was attended by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Musadik Malik, Rana Sanaullah, Riaz Hussain Pirzada, Aun Chaudhry, Shizra Mansab, Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, and Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan.
According to sources, the Law Minister briefed the cabinet in detail about the proposed 27th amendment. Suggestions from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) were also reviewed during the meeting.
Key Points of the Amendment
The proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment introduces a new position titled Commander of Defence Forces. It also includes provisions for establishing a Federal Constitutional Court, creating a joint seniority list of High Court judges, and empowering the Supreme Judicial Commission to transfer judges between High Courts or their regional benches without their consent.
The amendment draft will be presented in the Senate session today as a supplementary agenda item. The bill is expected to be referred to the Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice.
Reports suggest the Senate session may continue on Sunday, where the amendment will be debated. The amendment could be approved by the Senate on Monday.
Meanwhile, opposition parties are expected to stage a protest when the amendment is formally presented.
