The Government of Pakistan is considering introducing a category of affordable small cars in the country under the new auto policy, according to the reports on Wednesday. These are likely to be priced lower than the current entry-level car, the Suzuki Alto.
According to the sources, the proposed model is part of the new Auto Industry Development and Export Policy (AIDEP) 2026-31. The main objective of which is to reduce the wide price gap between motorcycles and 660 cc vehicles.
The scheme is being specially designed for low-income individuals, daily motorcycle users and first-time car buyers. It is especially for people who do not have a means of personal transport due to the expensive vehicles in the market.
According to the sources, the proposal is still in its initial stages. Additionally, its final approval will be given after consultation with relevant regulatory and policy forums.
What will be the new L6/L7 category
The proposed L6 and L7 category vehicles will be small in size and lightweight. These are expected to be fuel-efficient and suitable for daily commutes in urban areas.
According to further reports, the main objective of these vehicles is to provide safe and regular four-wheeled mobility at a low cost.
Reports say that it will have a positive economic and industrial impact. This move is expected to enable more people to buy cars and reduce dependence on motorcycles.
It can also help to boost the local auto industry and increase investment and production in the country.
This is because the shortage of affordable cars is currently a major problem in Pakistan. It forces a large number of people to use motorcycles despite safety risks.
Method for importing used vehicles in Pakistan changed
The Engineering Development Board (EDB) has introduced a new and strict code of conduct for the commercial import of used vehicles in Pakistan.
According to the new rules, only those companies will be allowed to import vehicles that are registered under the Companies Act 2017.
The Companies Act 2017 is basically a rulebook for how businesses in Pakistan must be set up and managed.
