Artificial intelligence, already transforming multiple industries, is now being prepared for introduction in the sport of cricket. According to media reports, efforts are underway to integrate AI into the game, with a particular focus on improving players’ ability to hit sixes.
Initial trials have reportedly begun as part of a broader push to bring advanced data-driven technology into cricket training and performance analysis. In this regard, trials have begun involving the installation of chips in cricket balls to collect important data.
Three English counties, Kent, Lancashire and Glamorgan, have started using AI technology, which is expected to improve players’ power-hitting abilities. In this new system, a small chip is embedded inside the ball. This chip, along with installed sensors, records key data such as the ball’s movement, speed, and angle. This information can help transform players’ training and selection methods.
Through this system, details such as bat and ball speed, shot angle, and other performance metrics can be analysed. This technology has been developed by Ars Simulations, which uses artificial intelligence to make net practice more realistic and similar to actual match conditions. Interestingly, it can even predict the possible outcome of each shot.
Cricket experts believe this technology could mark the beginning of a revolution in the sport by significantly increasing the use of data in the game. However, they have rejected the idea that it will eliminate human skill, stating instead that it will help further enhance players’ abilities.
