Pakistan’s higher education sector has achieved international acclaim as the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) stands out as one of the world’s largest universities, boasting over 1 million enrolled students, as reported by the UNESCO Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report 2026.
The report categorises AIOU among a distinguished group of global “mega universities” that are transforming access to higher education and broadening opportunities for millions of learners across the globe.
The UNESCO report emphasises that AIOU is on par with some of the largest distance learning institutions worldwide, such as China’s open university system with 4.6 million students, India’s IGNOU with 3.1 million, Türkiye’s Anadolu University with 1 million, Indonesia’s Universitas Terbuka with 0.8 million, and Nigeria’s NOUN with 0.5 million students.
Together, these institutions represent nearly 4% of the total global higher education enrollment, highlighting their increasing impact in the education sector.
The report about the world’s largest universities indicates that AIOU’s substantial enrollment figures reflect the growing significance of open and distance learning models, especially in nations where traditional universities cannot satisfy the escalating demand due to geographic, financial, and infrastructural limitations.
AIOU extends spring admissions 2026 deadline
Earlier, the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) extended the deadline for new admissions and enrollment of continuing students for the Spring 2026 semester, according to reports on Tuesday.
Students can now submit their forms until March 30, 2026, with a late fee. This fee includes four components.
The extension applies to several programs. These include Matric, Intermediate, BS, Teacher Training, Associate Degree Programs, and diploma and certificate courses offered in the Spring Semester.
