Akhtar Mengal resignation accepted

National Assembly speaker, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, has accepted the resignation of Balochistan National Party (BNP-M) chief Sardar Akhtar Jan Mengal on Wednesday, a private media channel reported.

According to the media reports, the National Assembly accepted Sardar Akhtar’s resignation last night after delaying it for several months.

The media reports available online also confirmed that during these several months, Sardar Akhtar enjoyed all the perks and privileges as a Member of the National Assembly (MNA). Sardar Akhtar Mengal had a flat in his custody in the Parliament Lodges.

Akhtar Mengal was an elected MNA from Khuzdar’s NA-256 in the February 2024 elections. He announced his resignation on September 3, 2024. He resigned by saying that he is unable to do anything for the people of Balochistan.

The BNP chief resigned after the horrific attacks in the province resulted in the death of 50 individuals, including 14 security officials. The reports confirmed that it was the attack by the banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA).

After his resignation in September 2024, the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, with other government officials, met him and assured him to address his grievences but Akhtar Mengal stood his ground.

Last July, authorities offloaded Mengal from a private airline flight bound for Dubai as he was travelling from Quetta. He later said that immigration staff informed him that officials had placed his name on the Provisional National Identification List (PNIL).

In 2025, Mengal staged a 20-day sit-in at Lak Pass in Mastung to protest the arrests of Baloch rights activists and police action.

On March 28, his party launched a long march from Wadh to Quetta. The party members protested for nearly three weeks against the detention of Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) leaders and activists, including Dr Mahrang Baloch and Sammi Deen Baloch, and demanded their release.
