Ali Khan Tareen has announced in a post on X that he will not take part in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise auction this year.
He said that he and his family will not attend today’s PSL franchise auction.
Representing South Punjab
In his message, Tareen claimed that his involvement in the PSL was not only about owning a cricket team, but it was also about representing South Punjab. Giving the region a stronger voice in national cricket is more important than owning a team.
Tareen described South Punjab as his home and that it remains close to his heart. For now, he said, “I will watch the tournament from the stands and support the players and fans.”
History of Multan Sultans with Ali Tareen
Ali Tareen purchased the Multan Sultans franchise in the 2018 bidding. The team remained under his ownership for seven years.
During this time, Multan Sultans became one of the league’s strongest teams and won the PSL title in 2021.
Controversy behind leaving the franchise
Ali Tareen’s time with the franchise has not been free of controversy. Over the past year, disputes emerged between Tareen and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Tareen accused PCB of poor communication, a lack of transparency, and exclusion of Multan Sultans from renewal offers.
On the other hand, PCB claimed that Tareen was uncooperative and openly critical about their point of view.
This all led to Ali Tareen from the ownership of Sultans. He said that he could not move under the PCB’s policies.
In his post, Tareen said he would be ready when the Multan franchise is officially put up for sale. He also wished the current bidders by saying, ‘may the most outspoken owner win.’
The PSL auction went ahead without him, as questions continue around the future ownership of Multan Sultans and the wider impact on the league.
