Karachi: A tragic accident struck Karachi on Monday as an eight-year-old boy fell into an open manhole in the Korangi area. The incident marks the latest in a series of fatalities involving uncovered manholes across the city.
The boy fell into the manhole within the jurisdiction of the Korangi Industrial Area police station. Local police and relevant authorities rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the accident.
Emergency response and legal action
Authorities confirmed that rescue operations were conducted immediately, but the child did not survive. Police say the inquiry into the incident is underway.
Public safety concerns
The incident highlights ongoing concerns over the city’s infrastructure and the dangers posed by open manholes in densely populated areas. City officials have faced repeated criticism for failing to secure such hazards, which continue to put residents, especially children, at risk.
Police and municipal authorities urged the public to remain cautious while walking in affected neighbourhoods and promised an investigation to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Nipa Chowrangi incident
Earlier, a three-year-old Ibrahim fell into an uncovered manhole near Nipa Chowrangi in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Opposition lawmakers sharply criticised the Sindh government and Karachi’s mayor for failing to address the persistent danger of open drains despite repeated warnings.
Following a separate incident today in which another toddler passed away, public calls for urgent safety measures, rigorous inspections and the immediate closure of all open manholes have intensified.
