Apple is offering one more chance for iPhone users hesitant to upgrade to iOS 26.2, with the upcoming iOS 18.7.3 expected to be the final update for those preferring to stay on the older software cycle.
On Friday, December 12, Apple surprised users by releasing iOS 26.2. Traditionally, Apple rolls out updates on Mondays or Tuesdays, but the company appears keen to stay on schedule despite expectations of a delay.
While the new release brings fresh features and improved security, some users are not yet ready to switch to the iOS 26 ecosystem.
iOS 18 updates continue
Apple first introduced iOS 18 alongside iOS 26 in September, allowing users to remain on the older software while still receiving bug fixes and security patches. This strategy continued with iOS 18.7.1 and 18.7.2, providing a slower transition path for those cautious about the new system. Many assumed iOS 18.7.2 would be the last update for iPhones capable of running iOS 26.
However, beta testers have now spotted iOS 18.7.3 running even on devices compatible with iOS 26, including the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR. This suggests Apple is giving users one more opportunity to delay the upgrade without losing support.
Why users might hold off
For those not keen on iOS 26’s new Liquid Glass design, staying on iOS 18 could be appealing. While iOS 26 introduces new features and enhanced security, iOS 18.7.3 ensures continued updates for those who prefer familiarity over the latest interface changes.
Release timeline
Although iOS 26.2 is already available, iOS 18.7.3 has not yet reached the general public. Beta testers can already access it through public or developer beta channels, and a full release is likely imminent, potentially within days. The update is substantial, with public beta downloads weighing around 7GB on devices like the iPhone 16e.
For users who want to stick with iOS 18, iOS 18.7.3 may well be the last chance to do so without skipping critical updates.
