Apple has built its own AI language model specifically for the Chinese market. Earlier it relied on third-party models to power AI features in the country.
According to reports, the AI model was developed in partnership with Alibaba Group, with support from the Chinese tech giant. Apple’s development of its own China-specific model has not been previously reported. The company had earlier relied on models from domestic partners to bring generative AI to iPhones and other devices sold in China.
Moreover, sources state that Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of AI tools, is expected to launch in China within the coming months, following an update to its iOS operating system.
Benefits of China AI model launch
A China-tailored model of its own would give Apple greater control over the AI experience in one of its most competitive overseas markets. In this market, it has previously lost ground to local rivals such as Huawei that have moved quickly to introduce AI-equipped handsets.
This launch would mark Apple’s dual-track approach to AI deployment for a foreign company operating in China, potentially enabling it to navigate the strict regulatory hurdles that have restricted access for many other U.S. technology firms.
The move would also make Apple the first foreign company approved by Beijing to offer an AI model. China will be representing a rare instance of collaboration between U.S. and Chinese technology firms amid a widening trade and diplomatic rift between the two countries over artificial intelligence.
