Former Pakistan batter Asif Ali has hinted about his possible return to the field of international cricket, although it is evident that, for now, he has only eyes on the upcoming 2026 Pakistan Super League (PSL 11), which will begin today.
The hard-hitting middle-order batsman who retired from international cricket in September last year having represented Pakistan in 21 ODIs & 58 T20Is, had initially planned to continue only with domestic and franchise cricket.
However, he recently made statements indicating that he is still willing to return to the national side should he be called upon.
Speaking in a preparation session of Lahore Qalandars at Lahore, Asif Ali said he still has no problem being a professional cricketer, and is willing to work for Pakistan if given the opportunity.
Despite keeping the door open for international cricket, the 34-year-old made it clear that his first priority is to play a role in Lahore Qalandars’ campaign in PSL 11, as they look to defend their title.
Known for his exploding finishing abilities, Asif Ali said he was willing to adapt to play different batting positions depending upon team requirements and combinations.
He also emphasised his commitment to continue playing professional cricket as long as he retains his level of fitness so he can maintain his commitment to the game.
Having him in PSL 11 can be a big boost to the Lahore Qalandars lineup and particularly to them in the crucial middle-order encounters where his experience will be crucial.
Asif Ali’s declarations suggest a sensible approach: immediate concern with the immediate responsibilities of franchise, but keeping oneself ready for possible national services.
Fans will be closely watching to see if the former international batter can transfer their experience to making an impact in the upcoming tournament possibly leading to a national comeback in the years to come.
