Australia has won the fifth and final test of the Ashes series on its last day on Thursday at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The series has been sealed by Australia with 4 wins and 1 loss; they have also gained 12 World Test Championship points with this series win.
Australia bowled out England for 342 early on day 5, and were chasing a target of 160. Australians were able to win by five wickets; they were given a tough time by England’s great bowling and fielding effort.
The tourists also dismissed Usman Khawaja and denied him a fairytale finish in his last match. Josh Tongue took him out on just six runs.
After that, the job was finished by Alex Carey (16 not out) and Cameron Green (22 not out).
The win has significantly strengthened Australia’s position in the World Test Championship 2025-2027 standings. They are in the top spot and are now boasting an 87.50 per cent of possible points in the cycle. In second position sits New Zealand, which recently won against the West Indies.
Mitchell Starc was earlier able to dismiss Jacob Bethell with the second new ball and finished up England’s second innings. The left-hander batsman, however, did score 150 runs.
The 22-year-old Jacob Bethell looked in good form. He batted with the tail. The player of the series, Starc, got him out on an outside edge on 154, with Alex Carey taking his catch behind the wickets.
Travis Head (29) and Jake Weatherald (34) were taken out early by Josh Tongue.
Marnus Labuschagne lost his wicket on 47 due to a mix-up, Steve Smith got out on 12 on an excellent delivery by Will Jacks, and then Khawaja was taken out by Tongue.
After that, Carey and Green took over, and they stabilised the batting and provided Australia with the last push. The match ended with Carey hitting a boundary.
