Australia easily overcome Ireland in T20 World Cup

Australia began their T20 World Cup 2026 Group B campaign in commanding fashion, defeating Ireland by 67 runs at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday.

After electing to bat, the world No. 2 side posted 182/6, powered by Marcus Stoinis’ quickfire 45 off 29 deliveries. In response, the 12th-ranked Irish team was bowled out for 115 in 16.5 overs, with Adam Zampa and Nathan Ellis claiming four wickets each.

Mitchell Marsh, Australia’s appointed captain for the tournament, missed the match after suffering a direct blow to the groin during a training session earlier in the week.

Australia posted a total of 182 for 6 in their 20 overs, thanks to an aggressive innings from Marcus Stoinis, who scored 45 off 29 balls, and a quickfire 37 off 17 balls from Josh Inglis.

Cameron Green (21) and Matt Renshaw (37) provided crucial support, stabilising the innings after early wickets.

Nathan Ellis led Australia’s bowling attack with a brilliant 4-wicket haul, earning him the man of the match award. Adam Zampa also played a key role, claiming 4 wickets and helping to dismantle the Irish batting lineup.

Ireland’s innings got off to a shaky start, with captain Paul Stirling forced to retire hurt due to injury. Russel Adair fell early for 12, while Harry Tector was dismissed for a duck off just three balls. Despite Lorcan Tucker’s valiant 56, the team could only muster 115 all out in 16.5 overs.

Australia’s seamless combination of explosive batting and disciplined bowling ensured a convincing victory, further cementing their status as strong contenders in Group B.
