The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand in 2028.
The next edition of the tournament is scheduled for 2028, and preparations are already underway, including the selection of host cities for matches.
According to international media reports, the two host nations are expected to select 10 cities to stage the games.
Australia, New Zealand automatically qualified
Australia and New Zealand have automatically qualified as host nations. Meanwhile, Pakistan, India, England, and South Africa secured their spots by reaching the Super Eights stage.
Sri Lanka and the West Indies have also qualified based on their performance in the Super Eights stage of the recent World Cup. Additionally, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Ireland have qualified based on the ICC rankings.
World Cup Chief Executive Joel Morrison stated that the 2028 tournament will be organised in the best possible manner.
So far, 12 teams have been confirmed for the tournament, while the remaining eight spots will be decided through the regional qualifier rounds. Teams that reached the Super 8 stage in the 2026 T20 World Cup have earned automatic qualification.
As a result, India, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, the West Indies, England, and South Africa have secured their places.
In total, nine teams have gained direct entry into the 2028 tournament. An additional three teams will qualify based on ICC rankings, with the cut-off date set for March 9. It is important to note that no international matches are scheduled before this deadline, meaning the rankings are unlikely to change.
At present, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Ireland are leading the race for these remaining spots, and their qualification is almost certain. The final confirmation is now waiting from the ICC on March 9.
