Will Babar Azam play today’s match against New Zealand?

Babar Azam New Zealand

Pakistan are due for a high-stakes Super 8 tussle against New Zealand in Match No. 41 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

With qualification to the semis on the line, every choice has consequences and the biggest question is about Babar Azam’s place in the playing XI.

Pakistan’s Road to the Super 8

Pakistan secured their Super 8 position after achieving a convincing win over Namibia. The momentum mainly came from Sahibzada Farhan who has been in sensational form.

Farhan currently leads the charts of runs scored in the tournament with a massive 220 runs including a breathtaking unbeaten 100 off 58 balls against Namibia.

His aggressive nature has brought energy in Pakistan’s top order at a crucial moment.

Pressure Mounting on Babar

While Farhan has blossomed, Babar Azam has struggled. The ex-Captain’s score of only 66 runs in 4 matches with a strike rate of 115.78 has caused some concern regarding whether he is suited for modern T20.

Despite the dip in form, team management is expected to keep him at No. 4 for the New Zealand clash.

However, the pressure is unarguable. A failure in this must-win encounter could have Pakistan reconsidering their combination, Fakhar Zaman being a possible replacement.

Spin to Define the Contest

The Colombo surface is likely to be slow and turning, conditions which could favour the spin-heavy attack of Pakistan.

Abrar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Saim Ayub and Usman Tariq are likely to play key roles.

Meanwhile, there is controversy over the inclusion of Shaheen Shah Afridi. He was rested against Namibia after having struggled on slow tracks.

As Pakistan prepare for New Zealand the spotlight is very much on Babar Azam, will he live up to his inclusion in the team or is there a huge selection call around the corner?
