After years of silence on rooftops, colourful kites are once again filling the skies as Punjab allows people to celebrate Basant 2026, marking a major return of one of the province’s most loved spring festivals. The decision has brought excitement, nostalgia and caution as citizens step back into a tradition that was once banned due to safety concerns.
Basant was banned nearly two decades ago after several deaths and injuries were linked to dangerous kite strings and unregulated celebrations. This year, however, the Punjab government has allowed Basant 2026 under strict rules, saying the aim is to revive culture without risking lives. Officials insist the festival will only continue if safety measures are followed.
Guidelines to celebrate Basant
Under the new guidelines for Basant 2026, only plain paper kites and cotton thread are permitted. Glass-coated, metallic or chemical strings are strictly banned. Authorities have also imposed limits on kite-flying hours and restricted celebrations near roads, power lines and sensitive areas. Police and district administrations have been deployed to monitor rooftops and markets.
Markets across Lahore and other cities have seen a sharp rise in activity ahead of Basant 2026. Kite sellers, dyers, tailors and food vendors say business has picked up after years of decline. Yellow clothes, traditional snacks and handmade kites are in high demand, bringing temporary relief to small traders and daily wage workers.
Excited Gen Z -nervous Boomers
Despite the excitement around Basant 2026, some citizens remain worried. Families who remember past tragedies say they support the festival only if rules are enforced properly. Doctors and rescue services have also been put on alert, while authorities warn that violations could lead to heavy fines and arrests.
For many, Basant 2026 is not just a festival but a test for Punjab — a chance to prove that tradition and safety can go hand in hand. As people celebrate with care and responsibility, the province is slowly relearning how to enjoy Basant without repeating the mistakes of the past.
