Bhati Gate manhole incident: complainants settle with accused, receive diyat

The complainant of the case in the Bhati gate manhole incident has effected a compromise with the accused, accordint ot the reports on Monday.

In a tweet on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, the Chief Minister (CM) of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, shared the update.

The post further added that the husband of the deceased, Ghulam Murtaza, has taken Rs85 lacs.

Additionally, the father, named Sajid,  has taken Rs25 lacs. According to the details, the court has granted them bail as well.

The five accused in the Bhati Gate incident are the site incharge Ahmed Nawaz, the company director Salman Yaseen and Usman Yaseen, the company’s safety officer, Muhammad Hanzala, and Asghar Ali.

The company’s owners, Usman Yaseen and Salman Yaseen, had been arrested. Additionally, a court had approved a four day physical remand of five accused, including safety officials, details suggest.

According to the reports, the company’s safety officer, Muhammad Hanzala, had also been taken into custody on charges of criminal negligence.

Investigations had started against the arrested suspects, including Asghar Ali, Ahmed Nawaz, safety officer Muhammad Hanzala, and the company owners Usman Yaseen and Salman Yaseen.

Bhati Gate incident

The woman’s father filed an FIR against the construction project’s manager and safety staff, according to the reports.

The FIR was registered at Bhati Gate police station under Section 322 (manslaughter) of the Pakistan Penal Code, according to Dawn. In it, the father said he received a call from his son-in-law about the incident.

He stated, “After getting the news, I, my son, my son-in-law, and a friend went to Data Darbar at about 2:30 AM. There, my son-in-law told us that his wife and daughter had fallen into the manhole.”

The FIR said the woman’s husband confirmed that her body had been recovered, but the daughter’s body was still missing at the time.

The father named three people in the FIR, blaming them for leaving the manhole open due to negligence.

They included the project manager, the safety in-charge, and the site in-charge.

He said, “Due to their gross negligence and irresponsibility, my daughter … and my granddaughter … lost their lives.”

Lahore Operations SSP Mohammad Tauqir told Dawn that the three suspects mentioned in the FIR had been arrested.

The arrests followed instructions from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to expand the investigation and hold those responsible accountable.
